Each of us has a fairly good idea of our physical health and what we need to do to maintain or improve it. For our mental health, self-assessment is more difficult. While in some cases we can conclude clearly, in other situations the concepts of good mental health and poor mental health have blurred contours. Mental health problems or disorders can also blur our analytical abilities.

We all have our own physical and mental capacities, temperament, education, and cultural experiences that define how we develop and interpret our lives. In each human life, personal abilities and/or the accumulation of events can deeply destabilize mental health to the point where outside help is needed. Too often still, we go beyond the limits of what is acceptable before we ask for help.
